Stray Kids Share Process Behind ‘Lose My Breath,’ Preparing for ‘Authentic’ New Music & Tour

Only two months ago, Stray Kids told Billboard the band’s 2024 would be “very different from what we’ve done so far,” with the four-time Billboard 200 chart-toppers’ latest New York trip already proving that to be the truth.

Sitting inside a recording studio owned by their U.S. label, Republic Records, the K-pop sensations’ charisma, candidness and slight trepidation shone through in a laid-back, honest chat to recount their Met Gala debut, just-released collaboration with Charlie Puth, and the anticipation surrounding their upcoming projects.

Reflecting on their Met Gala experience, the members expressed how their initial worries eventually turned into pure excitement. “We didn’t know anything about Met Gala,” Stray Kids leader Bang Chan shares in his affable Australian accent, before adding, “It was a really good experience.” Felix shares that “it was an honor and pleasure for us to show what our team color is like” with their appearance, thanks to Tommy Hilfiger, marking a significant milestone in attending one of fashion’s most prestigious nights out, as they mingled with celebrities like Chris Hemsworth, Baz Luhrmann and Jennie from BLACKPINK.

Shifting to their first original English single, their collaboration with Charlie Puth in “Lose My Breath” is highlighted as an experience for their team to learn but also share their years of experience in blending musical styles. “We had a lot of freedom to express our opinions,” notes Han, emphasizing the collaborative nature of the project that included Bang Chan, Changbin and himself writing and composing alongside Puth. For the pure-pop affair, Hyunjin says his aspiration is “to show that Stray Kids can do this kind of song” as a testament to their versatility and willingness to explore different musical landscapes.

While SKZ spoke with nervous excitement to Billboard just hours before the release of “Lose My Breath,” the band’s anticipation for their potential new future projects was also palpable.

While details remain under wraps, Bang Chan hinted at the exciting prospects: “If there was a new album, it’s definitely very new, very different yet very genuine and authentic.” The tour — that may or may not have been spoiled by Tommy Hilfiger himself — is also important, and when Lee Know mentions how “there are countries we haven’t been to yet,” he seems to hint toward a truly expansive global trek.

As Stray Kids continue to break barriers and captivate audiences worldwide, the Kids themselves remain grounded and committed to continually improving and leveling up artistry. Like “Lose My Breath,” their upcoming projects all show promise in showcasing an evolving and maturing sound to affirm their status as boundary-breakers in the global music scene. Read the full conversation from Billboard‘s chat with Stray Kids below.

Welcome back to New York, Stray Kids. It’s great to have you back, and we have to give you a big congratulations on your Met Gala debut. Overall, how was the experience?

Bang Chan: There was a lot happening, but I mean, it was a really good experience. We had fun.

Felix: It was such a huge honor because it was our first time as a team, and to go with Tommy Hilfiger to the Met Gala. Like what Chris [Bang Chan’s birth name] said, it’s such an honor but also a pleasure for us to show what our team color is like. It was incredible.

Bang Chan: Because we didn’t know anything about Met Gala! So, we went in, and then as soon as we got in, we walked up the stairs, and then there was Anna Wintour, Bad Bunny, Jennifer Lopez and Chris Hemsworth. So we said “Hi,” and then Chris was like, “Oh, I know you guys! You guys are two Australians — aww, come here, boys!” He took really great care of us. Baz was there too.

Felix: Baz Luhrmann was there as well. So, we had a nice chat with him. It was very nice, very nice.

Bang Chan: Ben Simmons, the basketball player, who is actually from and born in Australia, he was there. There were a lot.

It was amazing to see all eight of you there, but I’m curious how you got eight invitations for the Met Gala and how you coordinated on the red carpet with your reveal as eight?

Bang Chan: Big thanks to Tommy.

Felix: Yeah, big thanks to him.

Bang Chan: But at the Met, Tommy had a little bit of an idea. Because we have to unveil what was underneath, right? So, we kind of rehearsed how we should show what our outfits were. We did exactly what we had to do and were told to do; it was all right.

I think it was more important than you might realize. But let’s jump to the present with “Lose My Breath.” What’s the significance of this being Stray Kids’ first original English single?

Bang Chan: It is kind of exhilarating if you think about it. But one thing I wanted to point out is, I’m very, very thankful to the members because everyone recorded their parts on point and very good. The English has improved, I don’t know why, but yeah. [Laughs] So, I’m very very thankful to the members but we worked on the song here [in this New York studio], I think it was like the room across. But we had fun because, you know, Charlie Puth is very musically talented so we learnt a lot from him; it was a great experience.

You are so involved in your music, and Charlie Puth is also so involved in his music. How did you find the balance behind the scenes to collaborate?

Han: Since it’s a collaboration, the way we work might be different and there could have been clashes. But in the end, we were very open and Charlie was very open with ideas too. We had a lot of freedom to express our opinions and tried a lot of things So, we balanced it out from the get-go; it was very smooth. And with all these ideas we get from each other, we developed the parts that we wanted to show each other and the parts that we wanted to get closer aligned and eventually finished off the project.

Changbin: I was just really thrilled. There’s the Charlie that I know on social media, on videos or YouTube or whatever, and I think it was he even more than what I’ve seen on YouTube or social media so it was really cool. It was cool. He’s so musically talented, and it’s something that I, myself, want to learn from and want to have in being so versatile when you’re making music.

What are your goals or hopes for this song?

Hyunjin: Since it’s a pop genre-type of song that we haven’t done before, I want to show that Stray Kids can do this kind of song — I want to show the world, STAYs, everyone that we can do music like this. We also have a performance as well, and I want everyone out there to see what kind of performance we’ve prepared this time.

Since it might be a sound people don’t expect from Stray Kids, how do you think about or hope to introduce something new to fans?

Felix: This whole pop genre is very different to us, but like what Chris hyung said, we’re able to record the song and the lyrics perfectly through our own feelings and our emotions, which means we’re really able to express what the song is. And because we’re all experienced in making music and just showing fans what our style is, I think fans will really enjoy “Lose My Breath” as it is.

Bang Chan: It might not seem like a Stray Kids song, but in the end, it is our voices, we did write the lyrics, the melodies and everything as well. But I don’t know what people will think! I hope they can get a hint of Stray Kids in the whole platter.

I have a theory that “Lose My Breath” is the first taste or connection to the “special album” you teased at the top of the year...

Bang Chan: Um…I think of it as a side quest. “Lose My Breath” might just be a side quest…

I.N is smiling, though!

All: [Laugh]

Bang Chan: What I can say is: If there was a new album, um, it’s definitely, very new, very different yet very genuine and authentic. Because the messages that we want to say through music are all packed inside.

What’s the message you want to share when it comes to “Lose My Breath”?

Seungmin: We just want to appeal that we can, all of our members can sing the pop genre. From the moment we first began recording, everyone has been used to singing [in] like a really strong tone, but this time we try to, what the word in English? We tried to power down and compress — compressed into our natural voices. We tried to tone it down and record with a sound that naturally fit to the pop genre. I think that’s a big difference compared to the last album — I think that it will appeal to STAYs.

Bang Chan: It’s funny because I don’t usually get opportunities now to talk about what we did and everything, but definitely, with “Lose My Breath,” we did try a lot of different vocal techniques while we recorded the song. I hear that especially with Seungmin. Changbin as well. Everyone did their part so good.

Mr. Hilfger did share that you’re preparing a 40-date world tour. Can you share or confirm anything about the tour or preparations?

Bang Chan: He spoiled it on TV…and he spoiled it for us as well. [Laughs] I guess there would be a tour? But we’re still in the preparation process so we don’t know what’s what or don’t know how it’s gonna set out…

Seungmin: Lee Know wants to say something!

Lee Know: There are countries we haven’t been to yet and foods we want to eat while on the tour; touring means we can see a lot of STAYs. I think that’s what I’m looking forward to the most. It’s the chance to meet different STAYs in different parts of the world that is really important. But we haven’t started choreographing or developing the blueprints for the stage yet.

You’re in the moment with this single, but what’s coming up for Stray Kids in the immediate future? Or what message do you have for fans as you start this new chapter?

Bang Chan: [To their team member in the room] How much can we say?

Stray Kids team member: The less you talk, the better!

Stray Kids: [Laugh]

Bang Chan: Well, we don’t want to raise your expectations too much but when we head back [to Korea], it’s going to be late May. We’ve got some preparations for, well, let’s say, I guess a tour. If there’s an album, probably the album. Probably festivals. That’s is, you know, if. I don’t know if it’s true or not,

Han: There is nothing 100% real. We don’t know what’s happening.

Bang Chan: Lollapalooza is something that we’re really looking forward to. The one in Paris was amazing, there were a lot of people in the audience, and now we’re off to Chicago.

I.N: We want everyone to look forward to “Lose My Breath,” but there are a lot of things that are gonna come up and I hope you don’t get too surprised about the things that are going to come.

Tencent Music Shares Gain 16% on Earnings, Analyst Upgrades as Music Stocks Surge to New High

Tencent Music Entertainment (TME) stock rose 15.7% to $15.43 after the release of its first-quarter earnings on Monday (May 13), which showed net profit rising 28% to $212 million as music subscription revenue surpassed $500 million and the company’s subscribers rose by 7 million to 113 million. Online music revenue climbed 43% to $693 million, helping offset a nearly 50% decrease in social entertainment revenues to $244 million.

Numerous analysts upped their price targets for TME this week following the company’s earnings release. Jefferies raised TME to $15.40 from $12.00. Mizuho raised its price target to $15.00 from $13.00. HSBC also raised TME to $15.00 from $13.00.

Another Chinese music streaming company, Cloud Music, jumped 11.7% to 105.00 HKD this week after it announced a licensing deal with Kakao Entertainment for distribution in China. Kakao has over 50 “star” artists and 70,000 tracks, according to a press release announcing the pact. Cloud Music has not announced a date for its first-quarter earnings release.

Shares of TME have risen 97.6% over the last 52 weeks and gained 71.3% in 2024. The company (which trades on the NYSE and Hong Kong Stock Exchange) and Cloud Music (which trades on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange) are part of an upswing in Chinese stocks in 2024. After falling in January, the Shanghai Composite Index is up 15.5% since Feb. 2 — far better than the gains of the FTSE 100 (10.6%), S&P 500 (7.0%) and Nasdaq composite (6.8%) over that period.

TME has come a long way since being targeted by government regulators in 2021 for anticompetitive behavior. Its shares traded below $5 for much of 2022 and dropped as low as $3.14 in October of that year.

The 20-company Billboard Global Music Index rose 3.3% to a record 1,847.64, topping the previous high mark of 1,841.66 for the week ended April 5. While there were an equal number of winners and losers, the three top performers had double-digit gains — Cumulus Media was up 18% — while the worst-performing stock, Sphere Entertainment Co., fell 8.1%. Most of the index’s most valuable companies posted gains this week: Spotify increased 2.8% to $302.84, Universal Music Group rose 2.6% to 28.74 euros ($31.31) and Warner Music Group gained 1.3% to $32.04.

Music stocks bested numerous indexes. In the United States, the Nasdaq composite rose 2.1% to 16,685.97 and the S&P 500 gained 1.5% to 5,303.27. In the United Kingdom, the FTSE 100 declined 0.2% to 8,420.26. South Korea’s KOSPI Composite Index dropped 0.1% to 2,724.62.

B. Riley resumed coverage of Reservoir Media on Thursday (May 16) with a “buy” rating and an $11 price target. Reservoir shares rose 0.2% to $8.40 this week. The company will release first-quarter earnings on May 30.

Elsewhere, iHeartMedia dropped 6.2% to $1.21 this week. Guggenheim lowered its price target to $3 from $5 following the radio company’s earnings release on May 9, which prompted the stock to fall 36% last week. While Guggenheim maintained its “buy” rating, it dropped its price target to account for “headwinds at the core broadcast business,” analysts wrote in a May 15 note to investors.

Sphere Entertainment Co. dropped 8.1% to $36.07, bringing its year-to-date gain to 6.1%. The company announced Monday that it bought out the remaining shares of Holoplot GmbH, the German company that provided the 3D audio technology for the Sphere in Las Vegas.

Outside of the Billboard Global Music Index, JYP Entertainment fell 13.4% to 60,000 won ($44.30) following the company’s release of first-quarter earnings after the markets closed on May 10. Revenue increased 15.6% to 136.5 billion won ($100.8 million) but operating profit declined 20% to 33.6 billion won ($24.8 million) and net profit fell 26.3% to 31.4 billion won ($23.2 million). Operating profit and net profit declined due to increases in artist fees, labor costs and commissions at JYP Three Sixty, the company’s businesses that produce merchandise and license artists’ intellectual property.

Another non-index stock, Sony Corp., rose 11.1% to $83.74 following its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings release Tuesday (May 14). Driven by subscription streaming growth and aided by foreign exchange, Sony Music’s yen-denominated revenues jumped 23.5% to $2.85 billion in the quarter and the music division was the parent company’s largest contributor of operating income.

Bacilos Drops ‘Pequeños Romances’ Album & More New Music Latin

New Music Latin is a compilation of the best new Latin songs and albums recommended by Billboard’s Latin and Billboard Español editors. Check out this week’s picks below.

Bacilos, Pequeños Romances (Kooperativa/Bacilos LLC)

Bacilos has gifted their fans with their new album, Pequeños Romances, an 11-track musical journey that includes previously released singles “Anoche” and “Facho.” With its distinct tropi-pop sounds, the former really set the tone for what fans could expect on the album. Pequeños Romances, meaning “small romances,” dropped with focus single “Enredadera,” a bohemian tune backed by el cajón and enchanting violin chords, which tells the story of an eternal love. Notably, the song captures the band’s essence through a sample of two of their biggest hits: “Tabaco y Channel” and “Mi Primer Millón.”

During an IG live with Billboard, Jorge Villamizar and André Lopes explained how the album carries the unique sound of Miami — the place that has influenced and accompanied them throughout their career. Villamizar further emphasized that this album focused him on where his voice was headed, serving as an essential starting point for the album’s creation. — INGRID FAJARDO

Luis Fonsi, El Viaje (Universal Music Latino)

Luis Fonsi’s El Viaje is a trip in the literal and symbolic sense, taking the Puerto Rican artist on a journey where each song is titled after a different city in the world, from Colombia’s “Santa Marta,” a collab with Carlos Vives, to Italy’s “Roma,” a collab with Laura Pausini. Each song is completely different — “Santa Marta” is acoustic tropi pop while “Roma” is a sophisticated pop ballad, for example — but each underscores Fonsi’s penchant for fine, melodic songwriting that showcases vocals first and foremost. The album, produced by longtime collaborators Andrés Torres and Mauricio Rengifo, coincides with Fonsi’s 25th anniversary as a recording artist, and reminds us that pop can survive and thrive through the decades. — LEILA COBO

LAGOS, Alta Fidelidad (Warner Music México)

Three years after their debut album, LAGOS does not disappoint with their second studio album Alta Fidelidad. With their distinctive enveloping electro-pop sound, the Venezuelan duo, formed by musicians and producers Luis Jiménez and Agustín Zubillaga, explores love in all its stages, from the sweetness of romance to the end of a relationship. The project of 11 songs and a 20-second intro, also includes singles released in advance such as the collaborations “No se Acaba Hasta que Acabe” with REIK, “Blanco y Negro” with Elena Rose as well as the catchy “Tengamos Pasado” and its counterpart “Tuvimos Futuro.” They also join Greeicy on the emotional “Si Supiéramos Esta Noche.” The focus track, “Dime Quién,” stands out for its mischievous play with the names of several women, some mentioned in their songs.

“We had to rewrite [the album] twice practically. We realized that we were perhaps thinking more about the results than how the songs made us feel in that first attempt,” Jimenez said in a release statement. “This second album embodies a refined essence that reflects our growth,” they add. In addition, they shared that they were inspired by the pop sound of the ’80s, using Roland Juno 106 synthesizers and the LinnDrum drum machine, instruments that defined the pop and rock of the time, to produce all the songs. With Alta Fidelidad, LAGOS manages to link the past with the present with a contemporary sound that captivates from beginning to end, while solidifying its essence and bringing a breath of fresh air to the current music scene. LAGOS will be touring several cities in Mexico, the United States, Europe and Latin America. — LUISA CALLE

Alejo, En Esta Nos Fuimos Lejos (Jungl/ONErpm)

Alejo has no plans of slowing down, and his sophomore studio set, En Esta Nos Fuimos Lejos (“We went far with this one”), is proof of that. Sonically, the 14-track production finds the Puerto Rican artist navigating futuristic reggaetón, trap, and R&B fusions. Lyrically, it showcases his growth and maturity. In the opening track, “Cosmo,” for example, Alejo belts a heartfelt track about believing in himself, hustling hard, and manifests he will become a legend in the music realm. “Cosmo” is so personal it was even named after his beloved cat that passed away. Backing up his nickname, “El Favorito de las Nenas” (every girl’s favorite one), Alejo also delivers some sensual tracks as heard in focus single “Casa de Campo” and “Del Avión Pa’ Tu Apa,” which means “from the airplane to your apartment.” In En Esta Nos Fuimos Lejos, Alejo reels in collaborators ROBI for “La Crush”; Kris Floyd for “Los Lobos”; Jowell for “Wiki Wiki”; and Raul Clyde & Polima Westcoast for “Bien” — mainly giving a spotlight to the new generation of urban acts that is growing with him. — JESSICA ROIZ

Xavi & Tony Aguirre, “Ya Te Superé” (Interscope Records)

About five months ago, amidst the viral success of Xavi’s hit “La Diabla,” which scorched the Hot Latin Songs chart, an unexpected track leaked throughout TikTok and SoundCloud. That song was “Ya Te Superé,” the corridos kiss-off banger, which officially sees Xavi and Tony Aguirre joining forces again — following their October collab “Modo DND” — where they continue to display their ability to dominate the regional Mexican music scene with undeniable grit.

On the song’s journey to release, Xavi shared with Billboard Español: “‘Ya Te Superé’ is a song that Tony and I have been waiting to release for a while. Honestly, it’s one of my favorite projects that we got to work on together. I’m thrilled, because today is finally the day it premieres, after it had been leaked… you can imagine.” In the music video, the two stars trade their construction site for visions of wild parties, vividly capturing the essence of their fierce and celebratory sound.  — ISABELA RAYGOZA

Nora González, Mariachi Bebecín (CHR Records)

“La Charra Millenial” Nora González presents six acoustic folk versions of her rancheras and a new song in this seven-track EP, produced by Fabian Rincón, Rogelio Villaseñor and Pablo Vamer (who also collaborates on all the tracks), solely over trumpet and piano. With new versions of “Con Tu Memoria,” “Secreto a Voces” and the cheerful “Soy de Parral,” among others, Mariachi Bebecín opens with the new heartbreak song “Ese Tren Ya Se Fue,” written by El David Águilar and Loli Molina, about a woman who doesn’t let herself be trampled. “I don’t understand my love, why do you ask this bird to forget its dream of singing/ When all the mornings are beautiful, why kill the roses when you can always love,” go part of the lyrics.

Mariachi Bebecín is a way for me to explore another genre, always being faithful to my mariachi roots,” González tells Billboard Español. “Listening to songs that were full mariachi in this ‘naked’ way, gives me a new feeling, as if they were other songs.” Throughout the EP, the artist displays that sublime and powerful voice that earned her a Latin Grammy nomination for best ranchero/mariachi album in 2021 for #Charramillennial – Lady, and a prominent place on Billboard’s On The Radar Latin the following year. — SIGAL RATNER-ARIAS

In Canada: Musicians Pay Tribute to Steve Albini, Feist & More Shortlisted for 2024 Prism Prize

Canadian musicians who worked with Steve Albini are sharing their admiration.

Albini’s phenomenally prolific career included work on an estimated 2,000 albums, including landmark alt-rock records by Nirvana, Pixies and PJ Harvey. A wide range of notable Canadian artists worked with Albini and were quick to respond with effusive tributes to the Chicago-based studio wizard.

Related

Toronto drummer, composer and author Don Pyle worked with Albini as a member of acclaimed Toronto instrumental bands Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet and Phono-Comb. Albini was an admirer of Shadowy Men, even sending them a fan letter that helped prompt the band to hire him for sessions that led to the trio’s second album, 1993’s Sport Fishin’: The Lure of the Bait, The Luck of the Hook.

Albini would later work with Dallas Good and The Sadies on The Sadies’ 2001 album Tremendous Efforts and then its 2006 live album, The Sadies In Concert, Vol. 1, recorded at Lee’s Palace in Toronto (Pyle also assisted on the record). Alongside fellow Shadowy Men member Reid Diamond, Beverly Breckenridge and Good (later of The Sadies fame), Pyle was also in the lineup of Phono-Comb, a Toronto band that recruited Albini to work on its 1996 album, Fresh Gasoline.

In an interview with Billboard Canada, Pyle confirms that his late friend Dallas “definitely had a warm relationship with Steve. The Sadies recorded with him on two occasions. I know Steve definitely enjoyed the experience around coming up here and doing The Sadies live album. Doing the Phono-Comb album allowed for more social time and friendship to happen with them. Steve definitely respected who Dallas became.”

Acclaimed Guelph post-rock band King Cobb Steelie worked on material with Albini prior to the release of its second album, 1994’s Project Twinkle, which would later be credited to Bill Laswell as producer.

“He stayed at my house for a week and was a very generous and gracious guest,” group frontman Kevan Byrne tells Billboard Canada. “I think we were one of the first sessions he engineered after In Utero. Steve raved about Dave Grohl’s drumming and insisted that our drummer buy new white-coated Ambassador heads. Then he used a heat gun to break them in.”

Toronto hardcore faves Fucked Up offered up a succinct and poignant tribute on X: “rip steve…you hated our band and made fun of us while we were recording at your studio but you stood for something honest and fair in music and tried to make it a better place in everything you did and there will never be another one like you.”

Head to Billboard Canada for more remembrances and Albini tidbits from KEN Mode, Joel Plaskett, Metz and more.

From Billie Eilish’s long-awaited new album to Omar Apollo’s moody new single, check out just a few of our favorite releases from this week below:

Billie Eilish, Hit Me Hard and Soft

With her third studio album, Billie Eilish has made one thing abundantly clear — she’s not slowing down any time soon. Hit Me Hard and Soft feels like a purposeful progression from the unabashed eccentricity of When We All Fall Asleep, and the confessional dreaminess of Happier Than Ever. The 22-year-old star simultaneously embraces her fears (“Chichiro”) and her confidence (“The Greatest”) to thrilling effect with each successive song, while maintaining the vocal flourishes and production flair (courtesy of Finneas) that made her a star to begin with. But the star also takes a more candid look at her sexuality throughout the album, allowing herself to declare that she wants to “eat that girl for lunch” and singing about the unrequited love of the girl she sees “in the back of my mind all the time,” offering a new level of intimacy to an already stunning body of work.

Omar Apollo, “Dispose of Me”

Omar Apollo wants to slow it down, and after hearing “Dispose of Me,” you’ll be sure to understand why. This moving R&B ballad serves as a testament to the rising star’s vocal prowess, as he shows off as much of his impressive range as possible. Flowing from flawless falsetto to rumbling baritone, Apollo evokes the heartbreaking feeling the title promises within the first few seconds of this number, making “Dispose of Me” an absolute must-listen for anyone in need of a good cry.

Monét X Change, Grey Rainbow Vol. 1

The exchange rate just went up with Monét X Change’s stunning new R&B album Grey Rainbow Vol. 1. Throughout the Drag Race winner’s new project, Monét takes control of her own narrative with confessional songwriting about heartbreak (“Streetlight”), sex (“Rotation”) and moving forward (“Grey Rainbow”), all while utilizing her silky-smooth, classically-trained voice to thrilling effect. With part two due out later this year, Grey Rainbow Vol. 1 promises even more excellence from a drag superstar to watch.

VINCINT feat. Adam Lambert, “Another Lover”

VINCINT and Adam Lambert is the kind of artist pairing that spins your head with even the thought of them collaborating. So it’s all the more thrilling when the final product of that collaboration, “Another Lover,” is even better than you would have imagined. This pounding dance-pop track perfectly utilizes both artists’ stratospheric voices, as VINCINT and Lambert trade sultry verses about their powers of provocative persuasion. By the time you reach the final chorus, where both stars are riffing and running their hearts out over a thrilling beat, you’ll be feeling the ecstasy they keep singing about on this phenomenal pop banger.

Ben Platt feat. Brandy Clark, “Treehouse”

When you take a Broadway star and pair him with a once-in-a-generation folk singer, you get something magical. Ben Platt and Brandy Clark are a match made in heaven on the stunning new single “Treehouse,” as they duet together on a lovestruck ballad about finding love in all the right places. Neither artist allows the delicate mood to break, keeping their respective voices as tender as possible for this moving ode to building a foundation of love.

Towa Bird, “Time to Pretend” (MGMT cover)

There’s something ingenious about Towa Bird’s Spotify Singles cover of MGMT’s 2007 space-rock jam “Time to Pretend.” Where the original relied on synth arpeggios and electronic distortion, Bird’s version sees the singer embracing her top-tier guitar skills to make a thrilling, markedly-different version of the track. With her own distorted voice filtering through the driving guitar licks that provide the cover its internal engine, Towa Bird takes “Time to Pretend” to a new level on this thrilling new rendition.

Girli, Matriarchy

Rising alt-pop singer Girli has approximately zero time for bulls–t on her entrancing new album, Matriarchy. Across 14 songs, the singer-songwriter embraces a more electro-pop sound to help her talk about self-love (especially on the immediately arresting “Feel My Feelings”), queer crushes (“Nothing Hurts Like a Girl”) and embracing the fact that sometimes, things are just deeply messy (“Lose My Cool”). For anyone dealing with the harsh realities of learning to be an adult, Matriarchy is absolutely essential.

Friday Dance Music Guide: The Week’s Best New Tracks From Peggy Gou, Bebe Rexha, John Summit & More

This week in dance music: San Francisco’s Portola festival announced a massive 2024 lineup, we looked at why artists are moving their TikTok remixes off of Spotify, Marshmello and Kane Brown made chart history with their track “Miles On It” becoming the first track to hot the top five of both Hot Dance/Electronic Songs and Hot Country Songs, Chicago announced citywide celebrations for the 40th anniversary of house music, Paramount+ announced that a documentary about the Nova Music Festival massacre will be coming to the platform and French electronic pioneer Jean-Michel Jarre performed with Queen’s Brian May in Slovakia.

And of course, here are the best new dance tracks of the week.

Peggy Gou, “Lobster Telephone”

Weeks ahead of the release of her debut album, I Hear You, Peggy Gou has delivered the project’s fourth single, “Lobster Telephone.” Gou’s favorite song from the 10-track album (according to a press release) the dreamy house production also function as the project’s spiritual and aesthetic center, fitting squarely in the wheelhouse of the album’s heavy ’90s dance music influence. In her recent Billboard cover story, Gou said that I Hear You (out June 7 via XL Recordings) will be a success to her if people listen to it and “get a feeling.” Emanating warmth, this one feels a lot like the summer season ahead.

Bebe Rexha, “Chase It (Mmm Da Da Da) “

Bebe Rexha debuted her latest track “Chase” last month at Coachella, and today delivers the song in its most fully realized format, via a slick (and quite sexy) racing-themed video filmed between the L.A. river and a mechanic’s garage. The clip features Rexha and a crew of dancers demonstrating the pop-lock-and-wiggle potential of the song, which was produced by Chris Lake and Sammy Virji (who released their own collaboration “Summertime Blues” late last month), along with Punctual and Marco Straus. This dance-focused project is no surprise, given that Rexha has one biggest dance hits of the last few years with her David Guetta collab “I’m Good (Blue),” which spent 55 weeks at No. 1 on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs.

Shygirl feat. Danny L. Harle, “Encore”

“Buy a drink, take a shot/ Spill a bit/ Lick it up,” purrs Shygirl on her latest, “Encore.” The track whips up a spirit of hedonism with both these and other mature-themes lyrics in tandem with a thick, skittering electro production that’s well-matched with a music video capturing the type of late night behavior the song is designed to soundtrack and elicit. A collaboration with British producer Danny L. Harle, “Encore” comes from Shygirl’s forthcoming Club Shy Rmx EP, a collection of remixes of her 2024 Club Shy project by artists including VTSS, Logic1000, X-Coast and Fedde Le Grand. (Both projects are out via Because Music.) The London-based artist is on tour in the U.S. and Europe this summer and will go on the road with Charli XCX and Troye Sivan for their ravey 21-date Sweat tour starting in September.

John Summit & Sub Focus feat. Julia Church, “Go Back”

On his latest, “Go Back,” John Summit takes the progressive house style that’s coming to define his growing catalog and injects it with a dose of d’n’b via the help of U.K. genre star Sub Focus. Together, the guys — along with South Africa-born, London-based vocalist Julia Church — create a track with the same sort of ecstasy-laced emotiveness of other Summit hits like “Where You Are,” with this one getting a slightly harder, higher BPM treatment via a final third that’s fully dancefloor d’n’b. Out via Summit’s own Experts Only label, the song will surely be heard during his set EDC Las Vegas this weekend, with this stop coming amid a heavy summer tour schedule and a sold out show at Madison Square Garden on June 29.

Fatboy Slim feat. Dan Diamond & Luca Guerrieri, “Role Model”

The 500th release on Fatboy Slim’s Southern Fried Records is, appropriately, a Fatboy Slim track. Spicy and psychedelic in the style of any given Fatboy Slim set, “Role Model” is all scintillating percussion, cowbell, sirens and a tongue in cheek vocal from Dan Diamond about behaviors that could be considered role model material, depending on the type of person you are. Altogether, it’s high-quality dancefloor fare with an absurdist attitude, classic Fatboy Slim output. Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, Southern Fried Records was launched to release music by Fatboy Slim’s alias Mighty Dub Katz and over the years has released an eclectic mix of music by artists like Armand van Helden and Crookers.

Luis Fonsi’s ‘El Viaje,’ & More: Which Is Your Favorite New Latin Music Release This Week? Vote!

This week, Billboard’s New Music Latin roundup and playlist — curated by Billboard Latin and Billboard Español editors — features fresh new albums from artists such as Luis Fonsi, Nora Gonzalez, and LAGOS, to name a few.

Fonsi immerses us in a journey around the world with his album El Viaje, where each song is titled after a different city, such as “Santa Marta” in collaboration with the Colombian Carlos Vives and “Roma” with Italian Laura Pausini.

On the other hand, the “Charra Millenial” Nora González presents the 7-song EP Mariachi Bebecín, in which “the artist shows off that sublime and powerful voice,” comments the deputy editor of Billboard Español, Sigal Ratner-Arias.

Three years after their debut album, LAGOS released their second studio album Alta Fidelidad. With this, they manage to link the past with the present with elements of 80’s pop and a contemporary sound that captivates from beginning to end, while solidifying their essence and bringing a breath of fresh air to the current music scene.

Other new releases this week include Bacilo’s new álbum Pequeños Romances, “Ya Te Superé” from Xavi and Tony Aguirre, and Alejo’s album En Este Nos Fuimos Lejos, among others.

Last week, the song “La Durango” by Peso Pluma, Junior H, and Eslabon Armado received almost 70% of the votes, surpassing Grupo Frontera’s album, Jugando A Que No Pasa Nada, and Ryan Castro’s new set, El Cantante del Ghetto, to mention a few.
